Daniel Castillos
Ambassador Daniel Castillos assumed his post as Ambassador of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay to the United States in August 2025.
A career diplomat with over 35 years of distinguished service, he has represented Uruguay in various diplomatic missions abroad. Most recently, he served as Ambassador to the Russian Federation (2021-2025), with concurrent accreditation to Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Belarus. He previously held the position of Ambassador to South Africa (2013-2018), and served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Uruguay in Spain (2009-2013). His earlier postings include assignments at Uruguay’s embassies in Argentina and Switzerland.
At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Montevideo, Ambassador Castillos has held several high-level positions, including Chief of Staff to multiple Foreign Ministers, Deputy Director General for Political Affairs, Director of Antarctic and South Atlantic Affairs, Deputy National Coordinator to MERCOSUR’s Political Consultation and Coordination Forum, and Permanent Representative to the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR).
He holds a law degree from the University of the Republic (Uruguay), is a graduate of Uruguay’s Diplomatic Academy (IASE), and pursued postgraduate studies in International Relations at the University of Oxford (United Kingdom).
Ambassador Castillos is fluent in English and French, and has working knowledge of Portuguese and Italian. He is married to Ms. Eleonora Rodríguez and is the father of four children.
