Civil Register Inscription

Birth

If a person was born abroad and is the child or grandchild of at least one natural Uruguayan citizen (i.e. born in Uruguay), then that person is considered a Uruguayan national.

The Uruguayan nationality cannot be renounced and therefore it is possible for a person to have double nationality without ever losing their Uruguayan nationality.

Requirements to register a birth in the Uruguayan Civil Registry:

  • One or both parents need to be present with their corresponding identification documents.

  • Two witnesses need to be present (Uruguayan or other nationality) with their identification documents.

  • The parents need to present the birth certificate of the child apostilled in the place of birth.

  • Provide home address for parents and witnesses

  • The cost of the registration is $18 and $54 for the translation of the birth certificate. The payment is done with a money order or cashier check to the Consulate of Uruguay.

  • To make an appointment for a registration or if you have any questions, please contact the Consulate at: cgwashington@mrree.gub.uy
