Birth
If a person was born abroad and is the child or grandchild of at least one natural Uruguayan citizen (i.e. born in Uruguay), then that person is considered a Uruguayan national.
The Uruguayan nationality cannot be renounced and therefore it is possible for a person to have double nationality without ever losing their Uruguayan nationality.
Requirements to register a birth in the Uruguayan Civil Registry:
One or both parents need to be present with their corresponding identification documents.
Two witnesses need to be present (Uruguayan or other nationality) with their identification documents.
The parents need to present the birth certificate of the child apostilled in the place of birth.
Provide home address for parents and witnesses
The cost of the registration is $18 and $54 for the translation of the birth certificate. The payment is done with a money order or cashier check to the Consulate of Uruguay.
