Study in Uruguay

Student visa

US citizens who are traveling with a civilian passport do not need a visa to enter Uruguay. Upon entering Uruguay they will be granted 90 business days within the country. If you decide to extend your stay, you can renew your visit before the Uruguayan migration authorities by contacting the National Department of Migration through the following email addresses: dnm-secretaria@minterior.gub.uy or migracion@minterior.gub.uy

Other foreign citizens traveling to Uruguay: For other foreign citizens check the National Department of Migration website to find out whether or not you need to obtain a visa prior to entering Uruguay.

If you need a visa to enter Uruguay the procedure is the following: Applicants may apply for a study visa if they intend to study, scholarships or participate in internships in official, governmental or exchange programs in institutions accredited or authorized by the corresponding official bodies.

Length of stay: 30 days. In order to obtain your temporary residence, you will have a period of 30 days from the date of entry into the country.

Entry to Uruguay: The study visa will be of single entry. The validity of the visa will be of 180 days beginning the day the visa is issued (stamped).

Requirements for the study visa application:

  • Valid passport (at least for the next 6 months of arriving Uruguay), which is returned to the passport holder at that time. The passport needs to be in a good state. The Consulate does not hold the passport.

  • Application form complete and signed.

  • One passport-sized photograph.

  • Proof of income, duly accredited that can justify the maintenance and accommodation in Uruguay for the period of stay declared by the applicant.

  • Record of registration or note from the public or private educational institution or center where you will study, use scholarship or develop the internship. It must be signed by the legal representative of the institution and must contain the personal data of the representative, as well as the registration number or authorization of the Department of Culture and Education.

  • Contact in Uruguay (person or company) or hotel reservation made in the name of the person travelling.

  • On the day we issue the visa, the interested person will have to be present with their passport and money order of U$S54.
