Birth

If a person who was born abroad is child, or grandchild, of at least one natural Uruguayan citizen, then that person is considered a Uruguayan national.

The Uruguayan citizenship cannot be renounced and, therefore, it is possible for a person to have Uruguayan nationality as well as the nationality from another country, without ever losing their Uruguayan one.

Requirements to be able to register a birth in the Uruguayan Civil Register:

  • One or both parents need to be present with their corresponding identification documents.

  • Two witnesses need to be present as well (Uruguayan or other nationality) with their identification documents.

  • The parents need to present the birth certificate of the child apostilled in the place of birth and translated by the consulate or by a public Uruguayan translator.

  • Provide home address

  • The cost of this procedure is of $18, the payment for which is done with a money order or cashier check made out to the Consulate of Uruguay.
